Early knowledge of homeopathy in the Australian colonies

Similia Vol 21 No 2 – December 2009

Author: Barbara Armstrong

Abstract

This article provides information about Australia’s contact with homeopathy, prior to the influx of immigrants as a result of the gold rush in the early 1850s. Early colonists had various means of obtaining knowledge about the latest developments overseas, including letters, pamphlets and books,  overseas newspapers, and information from new colonists. The only real delay was the time it took for a ship to reach Australia. As a result, colonists had relatively early access to a knowledge of homeopathy or access to homeopathic medicines and the services of lay or qualified practitioners – far earlier than previously reported.
