Abstract
Bio
Migraine affects thousands of Australians each day and can cause loss of speech, dizziness, nausea and even temporary blindness, alongside terrible throbbing pain. 4.9 million individuals in Australia suffer from migraine. 71% of migraine sufferers are women and 86% are of working age. The total economic cost of migraine in Australia is $35.7 billion with no long-term relief to the patients!
Migraine cripples a patient’s productivity and quality of life. Patients often have to learn to live with it due to the lack of treatment available in conventional medicine. While the over-the-counter painkillers or prescription drugs work well in acute attacks, they fail to cure the chronicity and frequency. Secondly, there is a probability of the migraine worsening with the use of painkillers. Third, chronic kidney disease, gastrointestinal disturbances, disordered liver metabolism are on the rise in patients with chronic intake of painkillers.
This paper intends to prove the efficacy of homoeopathy in migraine, with minimal or no use of painkillers.
This case study entails twenty-five patients suffering from migraine treated with homoeopathy and illustrates follow-ups of 1-2 years.
Treatment protocols:
- Constitutional homoeopathic treatment backed by Hahnemannian guidelines.
- Counselling if needed
- Painkillers were stopped. In patients who couldn’t manage without the painkiller, it was tapered off within 6 months of treatment.
Scales used to assess follow-up:
- Migraine Disability Assessment Questionnaire (MIDAS)
- Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Survey (MSQ 2.1)
24 out of 25 patients had minimal or no migraine attacks within a year of starting homoeopathy. Use of painkillers was reduced by 95%. Intensity and frequency of all patients decreased by 30% in the first two months of treatment. The quality of life with homoeopathy improved two-fold. Migraine can thus be effectively controlled and cured with classical homoeopathy.
