Abstract
Thorough case taking is critical to successful prescribing for all cases regardless of the species. Taking the case of a companion animal can be straightforward but there is a number of possible pitfalls. This article briefly discusses some of these pitfalls and possible solutions. After case-taking the appropriate prescribing approach needs to be selected to arrive at the similimum. Generally, the similimum will be a polychrest but in approximately 20% of cases other remedies need to be prescribed. To exemplify this principle, four brief non-polychrest cases are presented.
