Abstract

Hypothyroidism is an abnormally low activity of the thyroid gland, resulting in retardation of growth, metabolism and mental development in children  and adults. It is one of the common and easily ignored diagnoses. Major causes of hypothyroidism include lack of dietary iodine, an autoimmune  condition (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) or a surgical removal of the thyroid gland. Both the hypothalamus and pituitary gland are involved in the signalling pathways that control the function of the thyroid gland. Diseases of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland can, therefore, affect the amount of thyroid  hormone secretion. Homeopathy’s strength lies in its evident effectiveness as it takes a holistic approach towards the sick individual by restoring the  equilibrium at mental, emotional and physical levels. For hypothyroidism, there are various effective medicines available in homeopathy, but the  selection depends upon the individuality of the patient. This article highlights a case history of a patient on hypothyroid tablets for one year with no  relief in symptoms and increasing Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels. Following homeopathic treatment, the patient improved symptomatically and the serum TSH levels dwindled within a year.
